Finger painting

Finger painting can be a young child's favorite "creative" activity.  Give a child a blank sheet of paper, some paint and a whole new world opens up.  The sight, the smell and the texture can ignite a child's imagination.  Most finger paintings  are exploratory and experimentation.  An  older person looking at a child's finger painting may see only swirls and lines, but to the child he  sees an elephant or a mountain range.    Finger painting in a controlled environment (not free art) can produce some very surprising results.

"Spring"  is a piece finger painted by eleven 3yr. olds  The children were instructed to use their fingers only.  No palming was allowed.  Working on a group piece eventually takes a life of its own.  The painting initially started out abstract with green paint and then evolved into a work of art with an impressionistic feel.

Up up and away

Creating these hot air balloons with young children is  fun and easy.  The best part of the project is the child's smile when they see themselves riding in the hot air balloon.  The children paint brown Chinese take-out boxes using scraping motion to create the wicker look.  Instead of paper, you can use colored card stock for the balloon. I  used card stock with different colors and patterns for this project .  I  photographed the children holding a block.  I cut out the image of the children, posted it on Popsicle sticks and secured it inside the box.
